What Is The Emerald Ash Borer And What Are The Symptoms?

The Emerald Ash Borer is an invasive insect that has killed millions of Ash trees since arriving in the US in 2002. It was first found in our region in 2012 when it was found in trees in Bucks county. The insect was verified in Mercer County in the spring of 2015. The insect feeds on and kills all varieties of Ash tree, a common forest and landscape tree in our region. Tree death usually occurs within 3-5 years of infestation, but often few if any symptoms are obvious the first year or two.

The most obvious symptoms of Emerald Ash Borer is dieback in the upper parts of the tree canopy and extensive shoots of new growth below these dead areas. Other symptoms include woodpecker damage on the bark as they feed on the insects, D shaped holes on the bark, vertical cracking of the bark, and s-shaped galleries beneath the bark. The mature insect itself is small, and a bright, iridescent green. The insect is usually feeding high up in the canopy and is rarely seen by the tree owner.
